Applied image recognition: guidelines for using deep learning models in practice

    Get PDF
In recent years, novel deep learning techniques, greater data availability, and a significant growth in computing powers have enabled AI researchers to tackle problems that had remained unassailable for many years. Furthermore, the advent of comprehensive AI frameworks offers the unique opportunity for adopting these new tools in applied fields. Information systems research can play a vital role in bridging the gap to practice. To this end, we conceptualize guidelines for applied image recognition spanning task definition, neural net configuration and training procedures. We showcase our guidelines by means of a biomedical research project for image recognition

Augmented Intelligence for Quality Control of Manual Assembly Processes using Industrial Wearable Systems

    Get PDF
Empowered by machine learning and artificial intelligence innovations, IoT devices have become a leading driver of digital transformation. A promising approach are augmented intelligence solutions which seek to enhance human performance in complex tasks. However, there are no turn-key solutions for developing and implementing such systems. One possible avenue is to complement multi-purpose hardware with flexible AI solutions which are adapted to a given task. We illustrate the bottom-up development of a machine learning backend for an augmented intelligence system in the manufacturing sector. A wearable device equipped with highly sensitive sensors is paired with a deep convolutional neural network to monitor connector systems assembly processes in real-time. Our initial study yields promising results in an experimental environment. While this establishes the feasibility of the suggested approach, further evaluations in more complex test cases and ultimately, in a real-world assembly process have to be performed

A PICTURE IS WORTH MORE THAN A THOUSAND PURCHASES: DESIGNING AN IMAGE-BASED FASHION CURATION SYSTEM

    Get PDF
Online retailing has been experiencing explosive growth for years and is dramatically reshaping the way people shop. Given the lack of personal interactions fashion retailers have to establish compelling service and information offerings to sustain this growth trajectory. A recent manifestation of this is the emergence of shopping curation as a service. For this purpose, experts manually craft individual outfits based on customer information from questionnaires. For the retailers as well as for the customers, this process entails severe weaknesses, particularly with regard to immediateness, scalability, and perceived financial risks. To overcome these limitations, we present an artificial fashion curation system for individual outfit recommendations that leverages deep learning techniques and unstructured data from social media and fashion blogs. Here, we lay out the artifact design and provide a comprehensive evaluation strategy to assess the system\u27s utility

Forest fire threatens global carbon sinks and population centres under rising atmospheric water demand

    Get PDF
Levels of fire activity and severity that are unprecedented in the instrumental record have recently been observed in forested regions around the world. Using a large sample of daily fire events and hourly climate data, here we show that fire activity in all global forest biomes responds strongly and predictably to exceedance of thresholds in atmospheric water demand, as measured by maximum daily vapour pressure deficit. The climatology of vapour pressure deficit can therefore be reliably used to predict forest fire risk under projected future climates. We find that climate change is projected to lead to widespread increases in risk, with at least 30 additional days above critical thresholds for fire activity in forest biomes on every continent by 2100 under rising emissions scenarios. Escalating forest fire risk threatens catastrophic carbon losses in the Amazon and major population health impacts from wildfire smoke in south Asia and east Africa.he authors acknowledge the New South Wales Government’s Department of Planning, Industry & Environment for providing funds to support this research via the NSW Bushfire Risk Management Research Hub. Upside-down fluxes Down Under: CO2 net sink in winter and net source in summer in a temperate evergreen broadleaf forest

Predicting the seasonal dynamics of ecosystem carbon fluxes is challenging in broadleaved evergreen forests because of their moderate climates and subtle changes in canopy phenology. We assessed the climatic and biotic drivers of the seasonality of net ecosystem–atmosphere CO2 exchange (NEE) of a eucalyptus-dominated forest near Sydney, Australia, using the eddy covariance method. The climate is characterised by a mean annual precipitation of 800mm and a mean annual temperature of 18°C, hot summers and mild winters, with highly variable precipitation. In the 4-year study, the ecosystem was a sink each year (−225gCm−2yr−1 on average, with a standard deviation of 108gCm−2yr−1); inter-annual variations were not related to meteorological conditions. Daily net C uptake was always detected during the cooler, drier winter months (June through August), while net C loss occurred during the warmer, wetter summer months (December through February). Gross primary productivity (GPP) seasonality was low, despite longer days with higher light intensity in summer, because vapour pressure deficit (D) and air temperature (Ta) restricted surface conductance during summer while winter temperatures were still high enough to support photosynthesis. Maximum GPP during ideal environmental conditions was significantly correlated with remotely sensed enhanced vegetation index (EVI; r2 = 0.46) and with canopy leaf area index (LAI; r2= 0.29), which increased rapidly after mid-summer rainfall events. Ecosystem respiration (ER) was highest during summer in wet soils and lowest during winter months. ER had larger seasonal amplitude compared to GPP, and therefore drove the seasonal variation of NEE. Because summer carbon uptake may become increasingly limited by atmospheric demand and high temperature, and because ecosystem respiration could be enhanced by rising temperatures, our results suggest the potential for large-scale seasonal shifts in NEE in sclerophyll vegetation under climate change. The Australian Education Investment Fund, Australian Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network, Australian Research Council and Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at Western Sydney University supported this work. Remarkable resilience of forest structure and biodiversity following fire in the peri-urban bushland of Sydney, Australia

In rapidly urbanizing areas, natural vegetation becomes fragmented, making conservation planning challenging, particularly as climate change accelerates fire risk. We studied urban forest fragments in two threatened eucalypt‐dominated (scribbly gum woodland, SGW, and ironbark forest, IF) communities across ~2000 ha near Sydney, Australia, to evaluate effects of fire frequency (0– 4 in last 25 years) and time since fire (0.5 to >25 years) on canopy structure, habitat quality and biodiversity (e.g., species richness). Airborne lidar was used to assess canopy height and density, and ground‐based surveys of 148 (400 m2) plots measured leaf area index (LAI), plant species com‐ position and habitat metrics such as litter cover and hollow‐bearing trees. LAI, canopy density, litter, and microbiotic soil crust increased with time since fire in both communities, while tree and mistletoe cover increased in IF. Unexpectedly, plant species richness increased with fire frequency, owing to increased shrub richness which offset decreased tree richness in both communities. These findings indicate biodiversity and canopy structure are generally resilient to a range of times since fire and fire frequencies across this study area. Nevertheless, reduced arboreal habitat quality and subtle shifts in community composition of resprouters and obligate seeders signal early concern for a scenario of increasing fire frequency under climate change. Ongoing assessment of fire responses is needed to ensure that biodiversity, canopy structure and ecosystem function are maintained in the remaining fragments of urban forests under future climate change which will likely drive hotter and more frequent fires

Global application of an unoccupied aerial vehicle photogrammetry protocol for predicting aboveground biomass in non‐forest ecosystems

    P. 1-15Non-forest ecosystems, dominated by shrubs, grasses and herbaceous plants, provide ecosystem services including carbon sequestration and forage for grazing, and are highly sensitive to climatic changes. Yet these ecosystems are poorly represented in remotely sensed biomass products and are undersampled by in situ monitoring. Current global change threats emphasize the need for new tools to capture biomass change in non-forest ecosystems at appropriate scales. Here we developed and deployed a new protocol for photogrammetric height using unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV) images to test its capability for delivering standardized measurements of biomass across a globally distributed field experiment. We assessed whether canopy height inferred from UAV photogrammetry allows the prediction of aboveground biomass (AGB) across low-stature plant species by conducting 38 photogrammetric surveys over 741 harvested plots to sample 50 species. We found mean canopy height was strongly predictive of AGB across species, with a median adjusted R2 of 0.87 (ranging from 0.46 to 0.99) and median prediction error from leave-one-out cross-validation of 3.9%. Biomass per-unit-of-height was similar within but different among, plant functional types. We found that photogrammetric reconstructions of canopy height were sensitive to wind speed but not sun elevation during surveys. We demonstrated that our photogrammetric approach produced generalizable measurements across growth forms and environmental settings and yielded accuracies as good as those obtained from in situ approaches. We demonstrate that using a standardized approach for UAV photogrammetry can deliver accurate AGB estimates across a wide range of dynamic and heterogeneous ecosystems. Many academic and land management institutions have the technical capacity to deploy these approaches over extents of 1–10 ha−1. Photogrammetric approaches could provide much-needed information required to calibrate and validate the vegetation models and satellite-derived biomass products that are essential to understand vulnerable and understudied non-forested ecosystems around the globe.S
